Every home needs a functioning water heater, but not every homeowner is a certified water heater contractor. It can be difficult to understand how to perform common maintenance, let alone repairs when the water heater has problems. This video answers some of the most common questions and busts water heater myths.
The first question is when the water heater needs to be replaced. People who move into a new home with a water heater that’s 10 or 15 years old may wonder if they need a new one, and then shudder at the thought of spending more money as they just bought a house. You can check the rating on the side of the tank to help, but if the tank is older than 10 years, it likely will need to be replaced soon.
Another popular question is how to extend the life of the water heater. There is an anode rod that is placed in new water tanks. It’s made of magnesium and helps keep the water clean, but erodes over time. It’s a sacrificial lamb that saves the glass lining from being eroded. If you replace this every two to three years, you can make the water heater last 20-30 years.
