Americans have a significant sleep deficit that they have accumulated over years. According to popular statistics, 42% of U.S. adults get less than seven hours of sleep per night, with seven to nine hours of sleep being the recommended amount for adults in America. Over time, this builds up a great sleep deficit that is tough to get rid of.

Americans have this sleep deficit due to numerous factors. First, Americans face a great deal of stress, and stress can cause problems with sleep. Stress is associated with numerous sleep disorders, including insomnia and COPD, both of which involve reduced or interrupted sleep.

Stress comes from numerous factors. For one, a person may be stressed about their job. Jobs in America often require longer than the 9 to 5, eight hour work day or 40 hour work week. People are often expected to stay longer at their jobs, sometimes for ten to 12 hours each day, or for 60 work weeks. This can cause stress and lack of sleep.

A 60 hour work week also comes with some problems in terms of health, which can also affect sleep. It is possible that a person’s self-care would go down according to the lack of sleep and the lack of energy that is caused by working 12 hour days. A person may feel less inclined to exercise, which is something that has been shown to increase quality of sleep.

Stress may also be linked to environmental factors. A person who lives in an abusive or violent situation may feel less inclined to sleep or have troubles getting to sleep. They may not feel safe in their own home, which would increase the feelings that something could go wrong, and that would keep them from getting to or staying asleep.

Stress is linked to numerous factors in lack of sleep, but fortunately there are techniques that a person can do to reduce stress before they go to sleep. These techniques can make it easier for a person to fall asleep. They calm the mind down and relax the body. They are helpful for right before bed.

The first major component to falling asleep quickly and staying asleep when asleep is exercise. Exercise, especially vigorous cardiovascular exercise (like running on the treadmill or hitting the stationary bike) wears out the body and gets it to relax more easily when it is time to go to sleep.

The second major component to falling asleep quickly and staying asleep when asleep is calming the mind down. This can be done when drinking a cup of decaffeinated tea before bedtime, reducing the amount of light in the living space, reducing the frequency of electronic devices, such as cell phones and televisions, and putting kids to bed early.

The third major component to falling asleep quickly and staying asleep when asleep is to use breathing exercises before falling asleep. There’s a general ratio called the four-ten-three breath count. Breath in for four seconds, hold for ten seconds, and breathe out for three seconds. All help to calm the mind and relax the body.

The fourth and last major component mentioned in this article is to listen to a certain type of music. 432 HZ music has been proven scientifically to be the most relaxing and anxiety reducing music out there. There are YouTube videos online that just play 432 HZ music for hours.
