Americans have big hearts, and are eager to show their support for military families and veterans by making charitable donations. Americans donated more than $227 billion to charity in 2009 alone, according to the GivingUSA foundation. In 2011, an estimated 2 million tons of clothing and textiles were recycled or donated to charitable organization within the United States.
Following the beginning of the War on Terror, Americans have banded together in show support for American forces fighting abroad as well for veterans and military families living at home. Over the recent years, organizations that help military families have seen an outpouring of charity donations, including monetary, food, and clothing donations.
However, there are also many Americans who would love to donate or contribute in one form or another to charities for military families, yet are unsure of how to start or where to begin. Here are some tips for getting started.
Do your homework
Let’s face it, there are many, many charities for military families. While this is a good thing, it can be difficult to decide which one you’d like to contribute to. As with making any kind of major decision, it’s best to do your homework. The internet is an invaluable resources and may help to answer any questions you have. Additionally, don’t be afraid to call the charity directly to ask questions or have your concerns addressed.
Getting the most bank for your buck
While there are a variety of charities for military families and veterans, there may be some whose goals and values closely align with your personal beliefs. Perhaps you’re passionate about a specific cause, such as helping military spouses find fulfilling careers, or working with veterans as they re-assimilate to civilian life. As such, you may find yourself gravitating towards one charity over another. It’s important to contribute where you think your time, money, or donation will make the biggest impact or where you feel the biggest need is.
